Welcome from the governors of Sandlings Primary School

We are very proud of our school and are pleased to be able to work with the staff, pupils and parents to make sure that ‘everyone belongs and thrives’.You can find meet the team by clicking on our "who we are " tab.

I’d be very pleased to chat with you, if you’d like to know more.

Kathy Garnett (Chair of Governors)

What do governors do?

Being a governor is an important volunteer role. The government and Ofsted have put greater emphasis on governance over recent years, with three core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

To do this, we have six full governing body meetings each year, as well as committee meetings each term. We review educational performance in our full governing body meetings. All governors are also invited to join the headteacher and chair of governors when they meet each half term to look in detail at data and other information about teaching and learning. At Sandlings, we have committees that focus on resources (finance and personnel) and on health and safety. We’re also involved in hearings and appeals, if this is occasionally needed.

Governors also carry out monitoring visits to see what’s happening in school and to talk with children, teachers and parents. Seeing the children at work and hearing them talk about their learning is one of the real pleasures of the governors’ role. All governors are DBS checked and, with school staff, we take our safeguarding role very seriously.

How to get involved

We’d like to hear your thoughts or answer your questions as parents or prospective parents. Usually, some of us will be at parents’ evenings and school concerts, so you could say hello to us then - or arrange a meeting via the school office.

We also have some vacancies! It’s good to have a wide range of experience, knowledge, skills and views within a governing body. You don’t need to know much about schools or about being a governor when you start – we will help you learn. We provide support and guidance for new governors and all governors have training each year. And we work together as a team!

If you’d like to know more about being a governor, please get in touch. And if you know someone else who might be interested, ask them to get in touch too – you don’t have to be a parent at Sandlings to be a governor here.
